TALC STONE - SOAPSTONE FOR ART

Soapstone and talc stone

It happens that people say soapstone when they actually mean talc stone. There is a difference.

Soapstone, also known as steatite, has a typical light grey - graphite color. Its primary components are magnetite, dolomite, chlorite, and talc. As talc is soft to touch, it gives the smooth feeling of rubbing a piece of dry soap. Soapstone is inert, alkalis and acids won't affect it as they will affect granite, marble or slate.
Soapstone is as hard as marble, the stone can easily be sawn, brushed or honed.
Soapstone is also famous for its remarkable cold and heat retention characteristics. It resists to very high temperatures without change in physical properties.

Talc stone, also known as saponite, has color tones in cream/beige/brown and green/grey. Talc stone is mostly made of talc and chlorite. It is soft to touch and feels greasy. It is often used for decorative household ornaments and sculptures.
